DIY: Homemade Natural Hand Sanitizer with Essential Oils (Alcohol-Free)

Recently, the FDA announced a new position on antibacterial soap: antibacterial products are no more effective than soap and water, and could be dangerous... Click here to read the full article (Smithsonianmag.com)

Hand cleansers are a convenient solution to clean your hands when soap and water are unavailable, but  traditional hand sanitizers contain isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. These ingredients can be harmful, especially to unsupervised children. Most hand sanitizers contain between 60 to 90 percent alcohol, and it is enough to cause alcohol poisoning if ingested. (According to CNN Health, a 2 ounce bottle of hand sanitizer may contain as much alcohol as four shots of vodka.) The alcohol in hand sanitizers can also be a fire hazard, cause severe skin and eye irritation, and be extremely drying to the skin.
Here is  a very simple solution to this problem–make your own alcohol-free hand sanitizer with only a few ingredients. This homemade version will not only clean your hands, but also moisturize them. :)

How to Make Homemade Essential Oil Hand Sanitizer

What You Need:
  • An empty 15 ml essential oil bottle (*Do not use plastic bottle.)
  • A spray top  (https://www.aromatools.com/18mm_White_Spray_Top_p/9241.htm)
  • Thayers, Alcohol Free Unscented Witch Hazel Toner with Aloe Vera - contain Grapefruit Seed Extract & Vitamin E (buy it on iHERB)
  • 5 drops of each Protected blend & Lavender essential oils
Directions:
1. Fill your glass bottle half-full with Witch Hazel
2. Add essential oils
3. Fill the remaining space in bottle with  Witch Hazel & shake well

*Witch Hazel has medicinal properties of Anti-inflammatory, Antimicrobial, Astringent, Moisturizer, Sun-protectant etc. (http://www.livestrong.com/article/122382-benefits-witch-hazel-skin-care/)

* Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera & Vitamin E is very nourishing for skin. Using alcohol based hand sanitizer is also drying to the skin. If you have sensitive skin, you must try this alcohol-free sanitizer recipe!
*Both Protected blend & Lavender essential oils are highly antibacterial as well as antiviral, and smell so lovely! (Lemon, Lime, Melaleuca, work well too.)
*Do not use plastic bottle.

IMPORTANT: Although there are good essential oils available to consumers, many product claiming to be essential oils often are not pure aromatic extracts and often contain fillers and non-aromatic compounds. Furthermore, there are no current regulatory standards for the descriptive use of the “therapeutic grade” for products labeled as essential oils. You want to get essential oils from the company who owns internal standards for sourcing and testing 100% pure aromatic botanical extracts using independent laboratory analysis in order to meet high standards for both purity and material composition and for accurate product labeling.
